“My job is to help bring out the best in people.”

Gerard Grogans begins his explanation of transformational life coaching not with transformation, but with whatever is preventing it. Speaking on the Dr. Tyra Hodge Show, the coach describes a job that starts with understanding what stands in someone’s way — before turning to what they might become.

“My job is to help bring out the best in people.”

That is the broad ambition. His account of the work itself is more sequential: work with a person to identify an obstacle, address it, then consider how to help them develop.

Finding what stands in the way

Grogans, a transformational life and speech development coach, puts the initial emphasis on understanding. In his description, recognising the difficulty comes before pursuing the desired change.

The distinction matters to the way he frames his role. He is not simply describing a better future; he is describing work with someone to establish why that future has remained out of reach. The starting point is the person and the barrier, rather than a ready-made picture of success.

His brief explanation does not identify particular obstacles or spell out techniques for removing them. It offers a statement of purpose and an outline of the process, rather than a detailed account of a coaching session.

From obstacles to development

For Grogans, removing a barrier is not the end of the task. It opens up the next question:

“And then once we remove what's standing in their way, how do we develop them into the best version of themselves that they can be?”

The conversation also introduces his book, The Blueprint: How to Recreate Your Life in Six Simple Steps. The steps themselves are not discussed in the clip. Here, his explanation remains focused on two connected tasks: clearing what obstructs a person’s development and helping that development take shape.
